Cold Turkey vs Freedom vs SelfControl: Which Is Hardest to Quit? (2026)

Every blocker works on a good day. What you're really paying for is what happens at 3 p.m., when you're tired and you decide you've earned five minutes on Reddit.

So we compared Cold Turkey, Freedom, and SelfControl on one main question: what happens when you try to quit?

💡

Quick verdict

  • Cold Turkey Blocker Pro: best if you want strict blocks on a Mac or Windows computer and don't want a subscription.
  • Freedom: best if you need the same blocks on your phone and computer.
  • SelfControl: worth trying if you want a free, simple website block on a Mac, as long as it passes a short test on your macOS version.

How we compared them: we used each company's current documentation, pricing pages, and public issue reports. We didn't run a live lockout test of each app on macOS 27. This post has no affiliate links.

What Happens When You Try to Quit

Cold Turkey: you choose the price of leaving

A locked block prevents you from disabling the extension or uninstalling the app. Cold Turkey's FAQ says the uninstaller will fail, and your browser stays blocked until you turn the extension back on.

What makes it different is the choice of locks:

  • Timer: no changes until a set time. You can extend it, but you can't shorten it.
  • Time range: no changes during chosen hours.
  • Random text: type up to 5,000 random characters to unlock.
  • Delay: wait through a countdown of up to 40 days.
  • Restart: restart your computer to unlock.
  • Password: useful if someone else holds it.

A Timer lock gives you little room to back out. A Delay lock gives you time to change your mind. Optional settings can also block system time changes and Activity Monitor. If you've ever talked yourself out of a block, Cold Turkey gives you the most control over how hard that is.

Locking is a Pro feature. The free version blocks websites for a set time, while app blocking, schedules, and all locking features need Blocker Pro.

Freedom: strict, but with a planned exit

Freedom's Mac app can't be quit or logged out of during a Locked Mode session. You also can't remove active blocklist items, and if you force quit the app, it relaunches and resumes the session.

It isn't an absolute lock, though. Freedom gives you one early exit every 7 days, and End Session appears during the first minute of a locked session. Its support team won't end sessions for you.

That weekly exit can be a useful safety valve. If you know you'd spend it on a bad afternoon, turn it off under Settings > Blocking Settings, or remove it for good. That removal can't be undone.

Two setup details matter:

Locked Mode and schedules need Premium. Breaks are off by default in Locked Mode. If you turn them on, you get one 5-minute break per session each day.

SelfControl: no choices, no exit

SelfControl has the simplest rule. You set a time, start the block, and wait. Its FAQ says the block stays on even if you restart your computer or delete the app, and that you can't uninstall it until the block ends.

There are no lock types, breaks, or built-in schedules. Because it blocks internet access rather than apps, it can't stop anything that works offline.

The bigger question is upkeep. The current app, version 4.0.2, dates from 2021. Its repository is still active enough to have received a Touch ID change in November 2025, but the FAQ says it's a volunteer project and replies can take months.

Public reports are mixed. One user reported a freeze on a macOS 26 beta, while another said it worked on macOS 26.1. In August 2026, a GitHub report described a block that showed its countdown after a reboot but no longer worked in regular Safari. These are individual reports, not proof it's broken. They're a good reason to test before you depend on it.

Browser Coverage

This is where all three can beat Mac Screen Time, which only promises website blocking in Safari. Each has its own catch, though.

  • Cold Turkey relies on browser extensions. It lists support for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Arc, and many others. Safari is supported without block page features. Remember to allow the extension in private windows when you install it.
  • Freedom uses a local proxy by default and can block websites in all browsers. If you use Website Exceptions or Non-Proxy Mode, Firefox is hidden because it isn't compatible with those features.
  • SelfControl blocks at the network level, but Firefox's DNS over HTTPS can make that unreliable. Its fix is to restart Firefox after each block starts. VPNs and proxies can also interfere.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • You mostly lose time on a computer: choose Cold Turkey. You get app blocking, schedules, and the widest choice of locks for one payment.
  • Your phone is part of the problem: choose Freedom. It's the only one here that also runs on iPhone and Android. Our iPhone app blocker guide covers the phone side in more detail.
  • You want free, and only websites distract you: try SelfControl with a short block first.
  • You use a work laptop: check with IT first. Cold Turkey requires admin rights, Freedom runs a local proxy, and SelfControl can clash with VPNs.

Before You Lock Anything

The easiest way to regret a blocker is to start with a long, strict session. Do this instead:

  1. Start with 15 minutes. Confirm that the block works in every browser you use.
  2. Check your work tools. A broad block can catch login pages or services that share a domain with something distracting.
  3. Keep the first real lock short. Try a single morning before you try a full week.
  4. Plan for real emergencies. These tools can be very hard to undo, so don't lock anything you might urgently need.

That applies to trials too. In one June 2026 Reddit post, a Mac user testing Cold Turkey said a running block stopped them from uninstalling it. The developer replied that being hard to undo is "the whole point of the app."

All three apps need meaningful access to your system to do their job, so download them only from their official sites.

A blocker also won't solve everything. If you're stuck in a loop of blocking and unblocking, the tool may be fine and the setup may be asking too much. See why you keep disabling your blocker, start with the free tools already on your Mac, and if your phone keeps pulling you back, a timed lock box can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is harder to turn off: Cold Turkey, Freedom, or SelfControl?

SelfControl has the simplest rule: its developers say you can't stop a block early, even by restarting or deleting the app. Cold Turkey can be just as strict, but you choose the lock type. Freedom's Locked Mode is strict too, but it includes one early exit every 7 days unless you turn that off.

Can you stop a Freedom Locked Mode session early?

Yes, in limited cases. Freedom allows one early exit every 7 days, and End Session also appears during the first minute of a locked session. You can turn off the weekly exit or remove it permanently in Blocking Settings. Freedom's support team won't end a session for you.

How much does Cold Turkey Blocker Pro cost?

Cold Turkey's checkout showed $45 as a one-time US price in November 2026. One purchase covers the Mac and Windows computers you personally use, and the company offers a 30-day refund. The free version includes a 7-day trial of Pro.

Is SelfControl still maintained?

Partly. Its GitHub repository isn't archived, and the code received a Touch ID change in November 2025, but the current app version is 4.0.2 from 2021. The FAQ says it's a volunteer project run almost entirely by one person, and replies can take months.

Do these blockers work on macOS 27?

We didn't find a clear answer for all three. Cold Turkey's requirements page lists macOS 26 as its newest version. Freedom lists macOS 11 or later. SelfControl's site still lists Mac OS X 10.10+. Run a short test block before you rely on any of them.

Which blocker works on iPhone?

Only Freedom. Cold Turkey says mobile systems aren't supported, and SelfControl is Mac-only. If your main distraction is your phone, a Mac blocker won't solve it.
